The Perk Filter – Media Filtration Device / Product Specifications
The Perk Filter™ is a storm water filtration device used to reduce pollutant loading in runoff from urban developments. A wide variety of filter medium is available to target specific pollutants of concern. The Perk Filter™ is available in multiple configurations, including catch basins, vaults, and manholes, allowing the specifier maximum design flexibility.
Impervious surfaces and other urban and suburban landscapes generate a variety of contaminants that can enter storm water, polluting downstream receiving waters. The Perk Filter™ captures and retains sediment, oils, metals and other target constituents close to the source and reduces the total discharge load.
The Perk Filter™ is manufactured from durable polymeric components with a polymer-coated steel support screen and stainless steel hardware. Its base construction allows use with a wide variety of media chosen to address site-specific pollutants of concern.
Perk Filters™ may be installed as a retrofit to suitable existing catch basins, or supplied as an integral part of a coated steel- or concrete-housed system. Modular system design provides flexibility of use, ease of maintenance and economy.
Washington State GULD Designation
The Perk Filter™ was subjected to rigorous laboratory and field testing and was issued the General Use Level Designation (GULD) from the Washington State Department of Ecology (DOE). The Perk Filter™ is the ONLY media filter system recognized effective for treatment of phosphorous.
For projects in areas where the flow rates require the GULD listing, choose from the designated products listed below.
APPLICATIONS
Perk Filters™ can be installed in existing drop inlets of adequate depth, installed as a catch basin system at individual inlets or as a centralized modular treatment system installed either on-line or off-line. Typical installation locations include:
Operation and Maintenance
SCOPE:
Federal, State and Local Clean Water Act regulations and those of insurance carriers require that stormwater filtration systems be maintained on a recurring basis. The intent of the regulations is to ensure that the systems, on a continuing basis, efficiently remove pollutants from stormwater runoff thereby preventing pollution of the nation’s water resources. These specifications apply to FloGard Perk Filter™ Systems as manufactured by KriStar Enterprises, Inc.
RECOMMENDED FREQUENCY OF SERVICE:
Drainage Protection Systems (DPS) and KriStar Enterprises, Inc., the manufacturer of the FloGard Perk Filter System recommend that the devices be serviced every six months (two times annually) on a recurring basis. Regulations and/or codes of some regulatory agencies and municipalities may require more frequent service.
RECOMMENDED TIMING OF SERVICE:
DPS guidelines for the timing of service are as follows:
For areas with a definite rainy season: Prior to and after the rainy season.
For areas subject to year-round rainfall: On a recurring basis (at least two times per year).
For areas with winter snow and summer rain: Prior to and just after the snow season.
For installed devices not subject to the elements (washracks, parking garages, etc.): On a recurring basis (no less than two times per year).
SERVICE PROCEDURES:
The inlet manhole cover(s) and or grate(s) shall be removed and placed to one side.
For systems with a FloGard Plus Catch Basin Insert, the insert will be cleaned in accordance with the general specifications for maintenance of those devices.
Any floatable materials will be removed from the inlet bay(s) and disposed of in accordance with local regulations.
The standing water shall be checked for clarity, oils and hydrocarbons, and the depth of the collected silt and sediment will be measured.
The filter media within the Perk Filter cartridge(s) will be replaced once per year.
If sediment level exceeds manufacturer’s recommended level for effective operation, an industrial vacuum shall be used to carefully remove all sediment and debris.
Note: DPS uses a truck-mounted vacuum for servicing these units. Pump-out by the industrial vacuum is not included as part of the normal service of the Perk Filter System and will be quoted on a case-by-case basis when the silt level warrants. Said quote will include the removal and disposal of standing water in accordance with local regulations.
The manhole cover(s) and/or grate(s) shall be replaced.
REPLACEMENT AND DISPOSAL OF FILTER MEDIA AND COLLECTED DEBRIS:
The filter media will be exchanged once per year. Depending upon the type of filter media utilized, additional fees may be incurred for testing and disposal of this waste material.
Note: As the generator, the landowner is ultimately responsible for the proper disposal of the exposed filter media and debris. Because the filter media likely contain petroleum hydrocarbons, heavy metals and other harmful pollutants, the materials may be treated as an EPA class 2 Waste and properly disposed of. DPS relieves the landowner of the actual disposal task, and provides certification of its completion in accordance with appropriate regulations.
DPS also has the capability of servicing all manner of catch basin inserts and catch basins without inserts, underground oil/water separators and other such devices. All DPS personnel are highly qualified technicians and are confined space trained and certified. Call us at (888) 950-8826 for further information and assistance.
